概要 | (a) Background
The purpose of this study is the rethinking of arts activities, especially music, in Occupational Therapy (OT). Arts activities have been widely applied in OT from the early stages of its history. However, when we consider the present arts situation, the author feels it necessary to raise and discuss the following questions: 1. Is it appropriate to apply arts activities only for medical treatment purposes? 2. What problems arise when an occupational therapist conducts arts activities despite a limited skill or background in the arts? 3. How relevant are the predominant disability acceptance theories to the disabled artists’ actual way of coping with their disabilities? 4. Can arts activities facilitate disability acceptance? (b) Methods Case study and literature inquiry on musicians who have become disabled, with reference to disability acceptance theories. (c) Results The following are pointed out as problems associated with arts activities in OT: 1. Some exceptions which are not consistent with predominant disability acceptance theories are found in the musicians’ cases. 2. The study suggests a general lack of understanding regarding the diverse and different values placed on arts from individual to individual. 3. Also suggested is a prevalent belief in OT that disabled persons cannot achieve arts expression sufficiently. (d) Conclusions Guitarist Derek Bailey and composer Robert Ashley have mobilized their disabilities as expression for their works. The author believes these works embody a new attitude toward what the author likes to call “disability-inclusive arts” in which the clients’ disabilities can be treated as their own expressions. |
