Summary A system of certified genetic counselors started from 2005, and 182people (as of March, 2016) are certified by the committee of a system of certified genetic counselors. The certified genetic counselor is "A specialist to support clients who suffer from genetic problems with medical geneticists and to protect their rights, for providing high quality genetic services" (the regulations of certified genetic counselors). The certification needs to renew every 5years under the condition that the credits earned which were prescribed. Anyone who wants to get the qualification is needs to pass certification examination carried out by the system committee after completed a master's course of a graduate school which has certified curriculum (a genetic counselor's training course of certified graduate school: 12schools).
70% of them work at medical institutions and also others work at diverse fields such as genetic testing companies, educational institutions and research Institutions. They work at various employment situations, and harsh conditions. The number of inquirelies of job offering that we accept increase recently.
It is necessary to learn to predecessors, but I believe it is essential that genetic counseling and the counselors grow in proportion to the medical system of Japan.
