Summary “Backward Design” is a new method of curriculum design, proposed by G. Wiggins and J. McTighe, and introduced to Japan by K. Nishioka. Although Backward Design is being adopted in primary education, there is only little practice of it in higher education. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a lecture on "Normal Distribution" for the liberal arts course "Statistics" in higher education using Backward Design. A normal distribution is a fundamental probability distribution in statistics, and appears in everyday life, for example, in height. Therefore, in order to facilitate students' understanding, the lecture is designed around a performance task on the subject of height.
