概要 | Background: Wnt/beta-catenin signaling is known to play an important role in metastatic and invasive phenotypes in many tumor including colon cancer. We studied here the relationship between Wnt signaling and pathological profiles in neuroendocrine tumors from patients. Methods: We evaluated immunohistochemically the subcellular localization of beta-catenin in a total 33 gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors including 13 gastric NETs and 20 rectal NETs. Expression of Ki-67 and the other marker proteins was examined with immunohistochemical staining in comparison with beta-catenin expression in NET, aimed at evaluating the prognostic value of these markers.
Result: All cases demonstrated membranous and cytoplasmic staining of beta-catenin. Nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin was frequently detected in 24 of 33 (72.7%), although there is significant correlation with rectal NETs. Nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin was correlated with the proliferative marker Ki-67 (MIB-1) labeling index and poor prognosis in rectal NETs. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin may be involved in proliferative activity and prognostic factor of rectal NET. |
