Summary The purpose of this study is to examine the job satisfaction and the actual situation of their life course in order to improve the workplace retention of the certified care workers. In Japan which is aging rapidly, the certified care worker called 'Kaigo-Fukushishi' was established as the main provider of elderly care service in 1988. There have been about 730,000 Kaigo-Fukushishis so far. It is the base of elderly care services that Kaigo-Fukushishis can keep working with satisfaction at their working facilities. However, their working places are not good enough for them to work. That is because they are hardpressed to work for the elderly with lower physical and mental functions. Moreover, the salary of Kaigo-Fukushishi is lower than that of other occupational categories for their hard work. About half of Kaigo-Fukushishis are said not to work at the facilities. The promotion of the workplace retention of Kaigo-Fukushishis is necessary for improving elderly care services quantitatively and qualitatively. The questionnaire survey was conducted to Kaigo-Fukushishis who had graduated from educational institutions more than 5 years before. They were asked about their job satisfaction and life events concerning their satisfaction. The average length of service of Kaigo-Fukushishis is about 5 years. Kaigo-Fukushishis working longer than the average length were thought to have long workplace retention. We aim to find factors related to job satisfaction Kaigo-Fukushishis working in the same facilities for 5 years or more have experienced in their life course including training school, work, and private life events. The result of this study will be compared with our previous study. And, this study is positioned as the preliminary study of the large-scale investigation that will be done in the future. This study was started in April 2009, and will be continued until March 2012.
