Summary | The purpose of this paper is to describe how we conducted extensive reading (ER) in order to improve English language education in Kurashiki Sakuyo University and Sakuyo Junior College of Music in the first term (from April to July) in 2017. Our study offers an analysis of a grand total of 733 students who belong to 5 different departments and do not major in foreign language. We attempted to practice ER by introducing 3 online systems; M-Reader, ERF Placement Test, and NetCommons 2. These systems provided the students with a variety of easy-to-read English books and helped them get better ideas of the value of ER, as well as tips about how to increase their English reading - from making appropriate book choices to increasing their reading speed. As shown in several previous studies, as a result, ER encouraged them to read their favorite books with their reading proficiency, and changed their reading from word-to-word translations to direct comprehension of English texts. At the same time, however, we found that some issues in racticing our all-university ER such as promotion of education guiding system, closely cooperation among the teaching staff, and so forth. |
