Summary Japanese government decided that “foreign language (mainly English)” class would become a mandatory subject for 5th and 6th graders and “foreign language activity” class was given to 3rd and 4th graders. Because English communication skills and teaching skills in English are required of elementary school teachers, the roles of universities that have an elementary school teacher training course/program become more important and they must change their own curriculum. The purpose of this study is to develop (plan tentatively) an English curriculum of elementary school teacher training course at university. Questionnaire method was adopted for 141 university students about their skills or abilities of practical English language teaching in elementary school. χ-square test and explorative factor analysis were used to analyze the answer data. In χ-square test, 9 items were statistically significant in grades. The result of factor analysis was classified into 3 skills or abilities: 1) Teaching or class management skills, 2) English proficiency, 3) English sounds or pronunciation. Especially, teaching or class management skills are statistically significant between freshmen and seniors. A tentative plan is based on these results. In this plan, university students need to acquire knowledge about English language education through English class as a general education. The plan also includes additional English learning programs such as extensive reading or e-learning to enhance their English proficiency.
