概要 In rabbit intestinal epithelium, vimentin intermediate filaments have been reported to be selectively expressed in the M cells of Peyer's patches. When vimentin in rabbit small intestine was stained immunohistochemically in our preliminary study, some vimentin-positive cells were observed in the villus epithelium. In this study, the morphological and histochemical features of vimentin-positive epithelial cells were compared with those of M cells of ileal Peyer's patches. Vimentin was visualized using anti-bovine vimentin monoclonal antibody (Vim3B4) and an avidin-biotin peroxidase complex system. Vimentin-positive cells in the villus epithelium were columnar, and had microvilli shorter than those of adjacent absorptive cells. Vimentin was located from the perinuclear region to the plasma membrane surrounding interepithelial lymphocytes. The alkaline phosphatase activity of the microvilli of the vimentin-positive cells was markedly weak compared with that of adjacent absorptive cells. When glycoconjugate on the apical cell surface was trebly stained with anti-vimentin antibody-alcian blue-PAS, the attenuated brush border of the vimentin-positive epithelial cells was alcian blue-positive and PAS-negative. In contrast, the brush border of the adjacent absorptive cells was clearly alcian blue-negative and PAS-positive. These morphological and histochemical features of the vimentin-positive cells resembled those of M cells. The results suggest that, in addition to M cells, vimentin-positive epithelial cells are also a member of the mucosal immune system in rabbit small intestine.
